Massive study reveals hidden toll of ICU on ARDS survivors

NCT ID NCT06272942

First seen Apr 13, 2026 · Last updated May 01, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study looked at health insurance records of over 640,000 people in the US who had acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and were treated in the ICU. Researchers wanted to find out what new health problems—physical, mental, or emotional—people face after leaving the ICU, known as post-intensive care syndrome (PICS). By comparing data from one year before and after the ICU stay, they hope to identify these issues early and improve care. No treatments or changes in care were given; the study simply observed existing data.
