Could a traditional hawaiian food hold the key to preventing pregnancy diabetes?
NCT ID NCT07446205
Summary
This small pilot study is testing whether eating one pound of fermented poi (a traditional Hawaiian food) daily for four weeks during pregnancy can improve a mother's gut bacteria and lower the risk of developing gestational diabetes. Fifty pregnant women on O'ahu will receive the poi along with nutrition tips via text message. The results will be compared to a similar group who did not eat poi to see if this culturally grounded diet shows promise for preventing this pregnancy complication.
