Can your lung bacteria predict antibiotic failure?

NCT ID NCT06916481

First seen Jan 03, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 34 times

Summary

This study examines how the community of bacteria in the lungs (the microbiome) affects how well pneumonia patients respond to antibiotics. Researchers will follow 300 adults with pneumonia, taking samples from the mouth, rectum, and lungs over 90 days. The goal is to see if the initial bacteria profile can predict treatment failure or the rise of antibiotic resistance, potentially leading to more personalized antibiotic choices.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help doctors predict which pneumonia patients will respond to antibiotics, reducing treatment failures and antibiotic resistance.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It may not lead to immediate changes in care, and results may not apply to all pneumonia patients.

Conditions

The condition(s) this trial relates to.

nosocomial infection pneumonia
