Cancer trial challenges standard bleeding treatment, could spare patients risky transfusions

Summary
This large study is comparing two strategies to prevent serious bleeding in adults with blood cancer who are receiving a stem cell transplant using their own cells. One group gets the current standard of routine platelet transfusions when counts are low. The other group gets a common oral and IV medication (tranexamic acid) to help blood clot, and only receives platelet transfusions if actual bleeding occurs. The goal is to see if the medication-based approach is safer, works as well or better to control bleeding, and reduces the need for transfusions and their potential side effects.
