Doctors test blood filtering as a lifeline for deadly sepsis

NCT ID NCT04057872

Summary

This small, early-stage study tested whether a blood-filtering procedure called therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is safe for adults with severe septic shock, a life-threatening condition with high mortality. The main goal was to check for safety issues and determine a tolerable dose. Researchers performed the procedure on 17 critically ill patients to see if it could help control the overwhelming immune response that damages organs in sepsis.
