Fake numbness: scientists create placebo that tricks the brain
NCT ID NCT06668116
First seen Jan 11, 2026 · Last updated May 10, 2026 · Updated 15 times
Summary
This study tested a placebo (fake) anesthetic that feels like a real nerve block but provides no pain relief. The goal is to use this placebo in future studies to more accurately measure how well nerve blocks work for pain. Seventeen healthy volunteers took part to see if the placebo could successfully mimic numbness and weakness without actually blocking pain signals.
