Blood clue may predict brain fog after surgery in seniors

NCT ID NCT07652008

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study investigates whether a molecule called PK2 in the blood is linked to thinking and memory problems that some older adults experience after surgery. Researchers will measure PK2 levels in 40 patients aged 65 to 80 before and after hip replacement surgery, and compare those levels with cognitive test results. The goal is to better understand and potentially predict these post-surgery cognitive changes.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If PK2 levels are linked to cognitive problems after surgery, this could point toward a way to identify at-risk patients earlier.

What could go wrong

This is a small observational study with only 40 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. It looks at a connection, not a treatment.
