New combo pill could tame stubborn diabetes
NCT ID NCT06571591
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether adding pioglitazone to the standard two-drug therapy (metformin and empagliflozin) helps people with type 2 diabetes who still have high blood sugar. Over 600 adults took part in this Phase 3 trial. The main goal was to see if the extra drug lowers HbA1c (a measure of blood sugar control) more than a placebo.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
pioglitazone
What this could lead to
If successful, adding pioglitazone could help people with type 2 diabetes achieve better blood sugar control when two other drugs are not enough.
What could go wrong
This is a completed Phase 3 trial, but results are not yet published. Pioglitazone has known risks like weight gain and fluid retention, and may not work for everyone.
