Pig liver machine offers lifeline for patients in sudden liver crisis

NCT ID NCT07429838

Summary

This is a first-in-human safety study testing a new temporary liver support system for people with a sudden, severe worsening of chronic liver failure. The system connects a patient's blood to a genetically engineered pig liver outside their body using a special machine, aiming to filter toxins and support liver function for a short period. The study will enroll up to 20 adults who are very sick and not currently eligible for a liver transplant, to see if the approach is safe and can improve key blood markers of liver health.
