First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This phase 2 trial is testing a new approach for people with advanced bile duct cancer that has caused a blockage. The treatment combines a light-activated drug (sodium porphyrin) with standard chemotherapy (gemcitabine and cisplatin). The goal is to see if this combination can help patients live longer and control the cancer. The study will enroll 30 participants and measure survival at 6 months as the main outcome.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Sodium porphyrin injection (photosensitizer) used in photodynamic therapy, plus gemcitabine and cisplatin chemotherapy
What this could lead to
If successful, this could offer a new treatment option to help people with advanced bile duct cancer live longer and control the disease.
What could go wrong
This is an early phase 2 trial with only 30 people, so results may not apply to everyone. The treatment may cause side effects like light sensitivity and chemotherapy-related toxicity.
