Dialysis mystery: scientists track hidden phosphate sources inside cells
NCT ID NCT03119818
First seen Jan 09, 2026 · Last updated Jun 10, 2026 · Updated 21 times
Summary
This study looked at 11 people with end-stage kidney disease to find out where the phosphate removed during dialysis comes from. Using a special MRI technique, researchers measured phosphate and energy molecules inside cells before and after a 4-hour dialysis session. The goal was to see if phosphate is pulled from inside cells, which could help explain why some patients feel unwell during treatment and lead to better dialysis methods.
