Blood test may improve treatment for inherited iron overload

NCT ID NCT00007150

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 30 times

Summary

This study looks at whether a simple blood test called MCV can help doctors decide when to remove blood from people with hereditary hemochromatosis, a condition where the body absorbs too much iron. About 622 participants aged 15 and older will have regular blood draws to lower their iron levels, and researchers will compare MCV to the standard ferritin test. The goal is to make treatment easier and also see if keeping iron low can improve liver disease and arthritis.
