New brain zapping method tested in humans for first time
NCT ID NCT07179848
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This early-phase trial is testing whether a new non-invasive brain stimulation technique called temporal interference stimulation (TIBS) is safe in healthy adults aged 20 to 65. Participants will receive either real or sham stimulation to different brain regions over 10 days, with cognitive tests and MRI scans before and after. The goal is to check for side effects and brain changes, not to treat any disease.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Temporal interference brain stimulation (TIBS) device
What this could lead to
If successful, this could pave the way for a safer, non-invasive way to stimulate deep brain areas, potentially helping treat conditions like depression or chronic pain without surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a very early Phase 1 safety trial in healthy volunteers, not patients. It is small (80 people) and only tests short-term effects, so it may not translate to real-world treatments or show any benefit.
