Could an ancient herb ease Chemo's worst side effects?
NCT ID NCT03314805
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether PG2, a compound from the astragalus root, can reduce fatigue and low white blood cell counts caused by chemotherapy in women with stage II or III breast cancer. Participants receive either PG2 or a placebo alongside their standard chemotherapy. The goal is to see if PG2 helps patients tolerate treatment better and stick with their full course of chemo.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
PG2 (astragalus polysaccharides)
What this could lead to
If it works, PG2 could offer a natural way to ease chemotherapy side effects like fatigue and low white blood cell counts, helping patients complete their treatment.
What could go wrong
This is a small Phase 2 trial, so results may not apply broadly. PG2 may not reduce side effects better than placebo, and its safety is still being studied.
