New PET scan could sharpen prostate cancer monitoring
NCT ID NCT04158245
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This pilot study tested whether a special PET scan (18F-fluciclovine) can better track how advanced prostate cancer responds to treatment compared to standard CT and bone scans. Nine men with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer received the scan before and 12 weeks after starting life-prolonging therapies. The goal was to see if the PET scan detects changes in tumors more sensitively, potentially guiding better treatment decisions.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
18F-fluciclovine (Axumin) PET scan
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to more accurate monitoring of prostate cancer treatment response, helping doctors tailor therapies earlier.
What could go wrong
This is a very small pilot study with only 9 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The scan is for monitoring, not treatment, and may not improve outcomes.
