New PET/MRI scan could help kids with brain tumors get better treatment
NCT ID NCT03977896
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tested whether a special type of brain scan (PET/MRI) can be used in children aged 5-17 with brain tumors. The scan combines two imaging techniques to give doctors more information about the tumor. Only 15 children took part, and the main goal was to see if the scan was practical and produced clear images. This is an early step toward possibly using this scan to guide treatment decisions.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
11C-MET (a radioactive tracer) and PET/MRI imaging
What this could lead to
If successful, this imaging method could help doctors identify different types of brain tumors before surgery, leading to more personalized treatment.
What could go wrong
This is a very small pilot study with only 15 children, so results may not apply to everyone. The scan is experimental and not yet proven to improve outcomes.
