Preemie brain shield: epo shows promise in landmark trial

NCT ID NCT01378273

First seen May 20, 2026 · Last updated Jun 16, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study tested whether giving a drug called erythropoietin (Epo) to extremely premature babies (born at 24-27 weeks) could lower their risk of death or severe brain problems later in childhood. Over 900 babies received either Epo or a placebo within their first day of life. The goal was to see if Epo could protect the developing brain and improve outcomes at age 2.
