Immunotherapy after surgery may keep melanoma at bay for longer

NCT ID NCT02362594

First seen Oct 31, 2025 · Last updated May 25, 2026 · Updated 33 times

Summary

This study looked at whether giving the immunotherapy drug pembrolizumab (Keytruda) after surgery for high-risk stage III melanoma helps keep the cancer from returning. About 1,000 participants were randomly assigned to receive either pembrolizumab or a placebo (inactive treatment) for up to a year. The main goal was to see how many people remained cancer-free at 6 months, and the study also tracked whether the drug helped those whose tumors had a specific marker called PD-L1.
