New combo therapy hopes to tackle tough bile duct cancer

NCT ID NCT06230471

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This phase 2 trial is testing whether adding the immunotherapy drug pembrolizumab to standard chemotherapy or the targeted drug lenvatinib can help people with advanced biliary tract cancer live longer and control their tumors better. The study will enroll 60 adults whose cancer has spread and cannot be removed by surgery. Participants will receive one of several treatment combinations, and researchers will monitor how well the tumors respond and how safe the treatments are.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Pembrolizumab (immunotherapy) combined with lenvatinib or chemotherapy (gemcitabine and oxaliplatin)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could point toward a more effective first-line treatment for advanced biliary tract cancer, potentially improving survival and tumor control.

What could go wrong

This is an early phase 2 trial with only 60 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The combination therapies may cause significant side effects, and there is no guarantee they will work better than current treatments.
