NCT ID NCT07538674
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This phase 2 trial tests whether a traditional Chinese herbal ointment, Peiyuan Guben Tongluo, can help elderly people with sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss) increase muscle mass and strength. Sixty participants aged 60-80 will receive the ointment along with nutritional supplements and exercise training for 12 weeks. The study measures changes in muscle mass using DXA scans and grip strength.

Active substance
Peiyuan Guben Tongluo Ointment (Ejiao concentrated) with nutritional supplements and exercise
What this could lead to
If successful, this could offer a new herbal-based treatment option to help elderly people with sarcopenia regain muscle mass and strength.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial with only 60 participants. The herbal ointment may not prove more effective than standard nutrition and exercise, and results may not apply to all patients.
