New drug shows promise for rare blood disorder

NCT ID NCT05096403

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested a drug called pegcetacoplan in 24 adults with cold agglutinin disease, a rare condition where the immune system destroys red blood cells. Participants received either the drug or a placebo twice a week for 24 weeks. The goal was to see if the drug could raise hemoglobin levels and reduce the need for blood transfusions.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Pegcetacoplan (a drug injected under the skin twice a week)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a new treatment option for people with cold agglutinin disease to improve red blood cell levels and reduce the need for blood transfusions.

What could go wrong

This is a small Phase 3 trial with only 24 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The drug requires lifelong use and carries infection risks due to required vaccinations.
