Autism toothbrushing breakthrough: peer videos beat 3D models
NCT ID NCT07492810
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested two teaching methods—watching a peer brush teeth in a video or using a 3D jaw model—to improve toothbrushing in 120 children with autism aged 6-12. Children who watched the peer video had less plaque and better brushing skills over six months compared to those using the 3D model or no special training. The results suggest that peer video modeling is a simple and effective way to promote oral health in children with autism.

What this could lead to
If this approach works well, it could provide a simple, effective way to help children with autism improve their toothbrushing habits and oral health.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed study with 120 children at one school. Results may not apply to all children with autism, and long-term effects need more research.
