Heart hole may double stroke danger after lung clot, researchers say

NCT ID NCT07519876

First seen Apr 14, 2026 · Last updated May 15, 2026 · Updated 8 times

Summary

This study looks at whether people who have a blood clot in the lungs (pulmonary embolism) are more likely to have a stroke if they also have a small hole in the heart, called a PFO. About 1 in 4 people have this hole, which can let a clot travel to the brain. Researchers will use brain scans and ultrasound to compare stroke outcomes over 90 days in 256 adults with and without the hole. No treatment is given; this is an observational study to better understand the risk.
