First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests a treatment called photodynamic therapy (PDT) for people with a severe brain cancer called glioblastoma. Patients take a drug that makes cancer cells sensitive to light, then during surgery, a special light is used to destroy remaining tumor cells. The goal is to see if this approach is safe and tolerable when added to standard care. The trial involves 12 adults aged 18 to 75 with newly diagnosed glioblastoma.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

5-aminolevulinic acid hydrochloride (Pentalafen®) with light therapy (Heliance® device)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a new treatment option that improves survival for people with glioblastoma, a severe brain cancer.

What could go wrong

This is an early-phase trial with only 12 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The treatment involves brain surgery and light therapy, which carries risks like infection or brain swelling.
