Could a quick cholesterol shot after a heart attack save lives?
NCT ID NCT07208006
First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether giving a powerful cholesterol-lowering drug (PCSK9 inhibitor) very early in the hospital, right after a heart attack, can reduce the chance of another heart attack, stroke, or death over the next year. About 1,500 adults with multiple blocked arteries will be split into two groups: one gets standard care, and the other gets the PCSK9 shot plus standard care. The goal is to see if the early, strong treatment helps stabilize dangerous plaques and prevents future heart problems.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- PCSK9 monoclonal antibody (a type of drug that lowers cholesterol quickly and strongly)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could point toward a new standard treatment to prevent repeat heart attacks and strokes in people with multiple blocked arteries.
- What could go wrong
- This is a large but still early-stage trial, and the drug may not reduce heart events more than standard care. It also requires injections and may have side effects like injection-site reactions.
