Drug trial aims to stop dangerous leaks after bowel surgery

NCT ID NCT02713776

Summary

This study tested if a drug called pasireotide could help patients with a high-output enterostomy—a surgical opening in the bowel that leaks too much fluid. When standard medicines fail, this high fluid loss can cause dehydration and kidney problems, keeping patients in the hospital longer. In this trial, 57 adults who had recent bowel surgery and high fluid output were randomly given either pasireotide or a placebo to see which one better reduced the leak volume.
