New imaging tool could spot Parkinson's years before symptoms worsen
NCT ID NCT07265596
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study is testing whether a special PET scan using a tracer called [18F] AV-133 can track changes in the brain of people with early, or 'prodromal,' Parkinson's disease. About 100 participants will be scanned at the start, after 12 months, and after 24 months. The goal is to see if this imaging method can measure disease progression and predict when motor symptoms will appear.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- [18F] AV-133 (a radioactive tracer for PET imaging)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could lead to better ways to detect Parkinson's disease early and track its progression, helping future treatment trials.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-phase imaging study, not a treatment trial. The tracer may not reliably predict clinical decline, and results may not apply to all patients.
