Can a pill or spray ease pain during fertility testing?
NCT ID NCT07383571
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested two different pain relievers—an oral tablet and a topical spray—against a placebo to see if they reduce pain during hysterosalpingography, an X-ray test for blocked fallopian tubes. 102 women with primary infertility took part. The goal was to find a simple way to make the procedure less painful.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
hyoscine butylbromide (oral) and lidocaine-prilocaine (topical spray)
What this could lead to
If effective, these treatments could provide a simple, safe way to reduce pain during a common fertility test, making the procedure more comfortable for women.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed trial with 102 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Pain relief may be modest or no better than placebo.
