New nerve block could slash opioid use in heart surgery

NCT ID NCT07315308

First seen Jan 11, 2026 · Last updated Apr 30, 2026 · Updated 17 times

Summary

This study tests if a numbing injection near the breastbone, given before heart surgery, can lower the amount of strong pain medicine (opioids) needed during the operation. About 80 adults having planned heart surgery will be randomly assigned to get either the injection plus standard anesthesia or standard anesthesia alone. The goal is to see if this approach reduces opioid use and speeds up recovery.
