New nerve block may slash opioid use in gallbladder surgery
NCT ID NCT06869837
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether a nerve block called the external oblique intercostal plane block could reduce the amount of opioid painkiller needed during laparoscopic gallbladder removal. 80 adults having elective surgery received the block before the procedure. Researchers measured opioid use and pain scores afterward to see if the block improved pain control and recovery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
external oblique intercostal plane block (nerve block with local anesthetic)
What this could lead to
If effective, this nerve block could reduce the need for strong painkillers during gallbladder surgery, leading to fewer side effects and faster recovery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed study with 80 participants. The nerve block may not work for everyone, and there is a small risk of allergic reaction or bleeding at the injection site.
