New pain block could reduce opioid use after mastectomy

NCT ID NCT07367568

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares two types of nerve blocks to control pain after modified radical mastectomy. 110 women will receive either a costotransverse foramen block or an erector spinae plane block, both using the numbing drug bupivacaine. The goal is to see which block reduces the need for morphine and provides better pain relief in the first two days after surgery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
bupivacaine
What this could lead to
If one block works better, it could mean less pain and less need for strong painkillers after mastectomy.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial comparing two established techniques. It may not show a clear winner, and results may not apply to all patients.
