First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares two types of nerve blocks for pain after open upper abdominal surgery. One is a newer technique (EOIFP block) and the other is a standard one (OSTAP block). The goal is to see how easy it is for doctors to learn the new block. 100 adults having surgery at Cleveland Clinic will take part.

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
nerve block (local anesthetic injection)
What this could lead to
If one block works better, it could improve pain control and reduce opioid use after abdominal surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early pilot study focused on feasibility, not on proving which block is better. Results may not apply to all surgeries or patients.
