Can gentle touch help babies with low muscle tone reach milestones?

NCT ID NCT03852004

First seen Jun 29, 2026 · Last updated Jun 30, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares osteopathic treatment to a simulated (sham) treatment in infants aged 8 to 24 months who have low muscle tone (hypotonia). The goal is to see if real osteopathy improves motor development, such as sitting and crawling, better than the simulation. Forty infants will be randomly assigned to receive either real or simulated osteopathy sessions, and their progress will be measured using the Denver II developmental scale.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

osteopathic manipulation

What this could lead to

If effective, osteopathy could offer a gentle, drug-free way to help infants with hypotonia reach motor milestones like sitting and crawling.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 40 infants. The simulated treatment may also show benefits, and results may not apply to all children with hypotonia.
