Do plastic surgical anchors cause hidden bone damage? new study aims to find out
NCT ID NCT06824545
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study will check how often bone loss happens around PEEK (a type of plastic) suture anchors used in hand and wrist surgeries, compared to metal or dissolving anchors. Researchers will review X-rays from 180 patients who had surgery in the past 10 years. They want to see if PEEK anchors cause more bone loss and whether that bone loss leads to worse outcomes or more complications.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If this study finds that PEEK anchors cause more bone loss without affecting patient outcomes, it could help surgeons choose the safest anchor type for hand and wrist surgeries.
- What could go wrong
- This is an observational study, not a treatment trial, so it won't test any new therapy. The results may not apply to all patients or surgeries, and bone loss seen on X-rays may not always cause symptoms.
