Could a blood pressure cuff save organs during heart surgery?
NCT ID NCT07383909
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests a technique called remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) during emergency surgery for a life-threatening aortic tear. RIPC involves briefly inflating a blood pressure cuff on the arm and thigh to temporarily restrict blood flow, which may help protect the heart, brain, and kidneys from damage during surgery. The trial will compare 1,296 patients who receive RIPC to those who receive a sham procedure, tracking complications for up to 5 years.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) procedure
What this could lead to
If it works, this simple, non-invasive procedure could reduce serious complications like heart, brain, or kidney damage after emergency aortic surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a large trial, but the procedure is still experimental. It may not reduce complications, and there is always a risk of unforeseen issues during emergency surgery.
