ER study tests if a glass of water can replace the IV drip

NCT ID NCT07361952

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares giving fluids by mouth (drinking tap water) versus through an IV line to adults in the emergency department who need fluids. 250 participants will be randomly assigned to one of the two methods. The main goal is to see if oral fluids can deliver the prescribed amount as effectively as IV fluids, and whether a larger trial is feasible.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

oral tap water vs intravenous crystalloid fluids

What this could lead to

If oral fluids work as well as IV, it could simplify care, reduce costs, and avoid needles for many ER patients needing fluids.

What could go wrong

This is a small feasibility study, not a large definitive trial. Oral fluids may not be absorbed quickly enough in some patients, and results may not apply to those with severe dehydration or other medical issues.
