Could a cheap pill replace IV drips for ulcer bleeding?
NCT ID NCT04394663
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study compares high-dose oral omeprazole (a common acid-reducing pill) against standard intravenous pantoprazole (given through a vein) in 128 adults who have had a bleeding stomach ulcer treated with endoscopy. The goal is to see if the oral pill is just as good at preventing rebleeding over 3 days. If it works, it could simplify treatment and lower costs.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
omeprazole (oral) and pantoprazole (intravenous)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that a cheaper, easier-to-take oral medication is just as effective as an IV drip for preventing ulcer rebleeding after endoscopy.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial (128 participants) testing a non-inferiority hypothesis, so results may not apply broadly. The oral drug may not control stomach acid as consistently as the IV drip.
