Can tailored nutrition help ICU patients recover better?
NCT ID NCT07343440
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether using a device that measures each patient's energy needs (indirect calorimetry) to guide nutrition improves quality of life in critically ill adults on breathing machines. About 356 patients will be randomly assigned to either personalized nutrition or standard formula-based care. The main goal is to see if this approach leads to better recovery and fewer complications.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Indirect calorimetry-guided nutritional support
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that personalized nutrition based on energy needs improves recovery and quality of life after critical illness.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage study with 356 participants, so results may not apply to all ICU patients. The intervention is complex and may not show clear benefits over standard care.
