New study tests if automatically enrolling smokers in quit programs boosts success
NCT ID NCT03477435
First seen Mar 20, 2026 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 8 times
Summary
This study tested two methods to help smokers quit: an opt-out approach where everyone is automatically referred to Quitline or text messaging unless they say no, and an opt-in approach where people must actively sign up. Over 1,300 veterans from two VA clinics took part. The goal was to see which method leads to more people accepting and using treatment, and ultimately quitting smoking.
