Scientists probe hidden link between pain meds and breathing power

NCT ID NCT05856136

Summary

This Mayo Clinic study aims to understand how opioid pain medications affect the diaphragm muscle's ability to generate force during breathing. Researchers will measure diaphragm stiffness using ultrasound in 69 adults having lower extremity orthopedic surgery. The study seeks to gather knowledge about how different opioid doses impact respiratory muscle function without testing any new treatments.
