One leg at a time: new exercise hope for lung disease patients

NCT ID NCT03752892

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study looks at whether training one leg at a time on a bike can help people with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) exercise longer. IPF makes it hard to breathe, so using fewer muscles may allow a better workout. The trial will compare one-legged cycling to the usual two-legged cycling in 50 patients to see which improves endurance more.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
one-legged cycle training
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a better way for people with IPF to exercise and improve their endurance.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 50 people. The results may not apply to all IPF patients, and the exercise approach may not prove more effective than standard training.
