Stomach cancer surgery may get simpler: omentum preservation under study
NCT ID NCT05180864
First seen Jun 26, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study compares two surgical approaches for stomach cancer: removing the entire omentum (a fatty layer in the abdomen) versus preserving it. The omentum helps fight infections and prevent bowel blockages. Researchers want to see if keeping it leads to fewer complications without affecting survival. About 654 adults with resectable stomach cancer will be randomly assigned to one of the two procedures.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- gastrectomy (surgery to remove part or all of the stomach)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could show that preserving the omentum during stomach cancer surgery is just as effective as removing it, while reducing complications like infections and bowel blockages.
- What could go wrong
- This is a non-inferiority trial, meaning it aims to prove that preserving the omentum is not worse than removing it. However, it is still recruiting and results are not yet available, so there is no guarantee of benefit or safety.
