No clamp, no stitch: new kidney surgery aims to save more function
NCT ID NCT07141225
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tests a new surgical technique for removing small kidney tumors (up to 7 cm) using a robot. Instead of clamping the kidney's blood supply and stitching the wound closed, surgeons avoid clamping and use heat and special materials to stop bleeding. The goal is to preserve as much healthy kidney tissue as possible. The trial will enroll 190 adults and measure kidney function after surgery, along with complications and blood loss.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Off-Clamp Sutureless Technique (procedure)
What this could lead to
If successful, this technique could become a standard option for kidney cancer surgery, helping more patients preserve kidney function without increasing risks.
What could go wrong
This is a single-center study with no control group, so results may not apply broadly. The technique is still being tested for larger or more complex tumors, and bleeding or urine leaks remain possible risks.
