New eye on pancreatic cancer: Ultra-High resolution OCT could catch tumors at micrometer scale

NCT ID NCT03711890

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a high-powered imaging technique called ultra-high resolution optical coherence tomography (OCT) can detect tiny, early-stage pancreatic cancers in tissue samples removed during surgery. Researchers will compare OCT images with standard lab analysis and a blood test that looks for cancer-related particles. The goal is to see if OCT can identify cancers that are too small to spot with current methods.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) imaging

What this could lead to

If successful, this imaging technique could help doctors spot pancreatic cancer at a much earlier, more treatable stage.

What could go wrong

This is a small pilot study using tissue already removed during surgery, so it may not translate to real-time detection in living patients.
