New study maps best antibiotic steps for fever in cancer patients
NCT ID NCT07204522
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests a specific order of antibiotics for cancer patients who develop fever due to low white blood cells (febrile neutropenia). Twenty adults with blood cancers will receive a carbapenem first, then add vancomycin or linezolid if fever persists, and finally an antifungal if needed. The goal is to see how well this step-up plan controls fever and infection, and to monitor for side effects.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Carbapenems, vancomycin, linezolid, antifungal agents, ceftazidime-avibactam, aztreonam
What this could lead to
If successful, this could establish a clear, effective treatment roadmap for managing fever in cancer patients with weakened immune systems, potentially reducing complications.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early observational study with only 20 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The step-up approach may not work for everyone and carries risks like side effects from multiple antibiotics.
