Could a pill stop the stomach bug? new vaccine trial shows promise

NCT ID NCT05212168

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested an experimental oral vaccine designed to protect against norovirus, a highly contagious virus that causes vomiting and diarrhea. Healthy adults aged 18 to 49 received either a single dose of the vaccine or a placebo. About a month later, all volunteers were intentionally exposed to the norovirus in a controlled setting to see if the vaccine could prevent illness. The trial measured how many people got sick and looked at immune responses in the blood.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

oral norovirus vaccine (VXA-G1.1-NN) with a double-stranded RNA adjuvant

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a convenient single-dose oral vaccine that protects against norovirus, the leading cause of stomach flu outbreaks.

What could go wrong

This is an early-phase trial with only 165 participants, and it tested protection against one specific strain. The vaccine may not work as well in real-world settings or against other norovirus strains.
