New study tests airflow device vs curette for implant gum disease
NCT ID NCT06849856
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested two non-surgical treatments for peri-implantitis, a gum disease that affects dental implants. Thirty-eight adults with deep gum pockets around their implants received either a titanium curette, an airflow device with erythritol powder, or both. Researchers measured gum pocket depth, bleeding, and biomarkers in the gum fluid over 6 months to see which approach works best.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
airflow device with erythritol powder and titanium curette
What this could lead to
If successful, this could point toward a more effective non-surgical treatment for peri-implantitis, potentially improving gum health and reducing bone loss around dental implants.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed study with only 38 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The treatments are compared for short-term outcomes (6 months), and long-term benefits are uncertain.
