Summary
This study tests whether a sedative called dexmedetomidine can help critically ill adults tolerate non-invasive ventilation (a mask that helps them breathe) and avoid needing a breathing tube or dying. About 846 patients with acute respiratory failure will receive either the drug or a placebo. The goal is to see if the drug reduces the risk of treatment failure.
