Doctors test simple eye scan to spot dangerous brain swelling in kids

NCT ID NCT01796015

Summary

This study tested a new, non-invasive method to detect high pressure inside the skull (intracranial hypertension) in children with brain injuries. Researchers used a simple ultrasound scan to measure the width of the optic nerve behind the eye, which can swell when brain pressure is too high. The goal was to see if this quick, painless scan could be as accurate as the current method, which requires drilling a small hole in the skull to place a pressure monitor.
