Silence in the OR: headphones may speed up knee surgery
NCT ID NCT07589582
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jul 08, 2026 · Updated 3 times
Summary
This pilot study tests whether active noise-cancelling headphones and a closed-loop communication system can reduce operating time and improve teamwork during anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. Fifty-four patients having ACL surgery will be randomly assigned to either the noise-cancelling system or standard operating room conditions. The main goal is to see if the intervention shortens surgery by up to 12 minutes and reduces mental workload for the surgical team.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Active noise-cancelling headphones and closed-loop communication system
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could make ACL reconstruction surgeries faster and more consistent, potentially reducing patient time under anesthesia.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small pilot study with only 54 participants, so results may not apply to all hospitals or surgeries. The intervention is behavioral, not a drug, so the effect may be modest.
